Retaining Rings

Retaining rings are installed on a shaft or a bore / housing to secure assemblies, components or machinery parts. Raptor Supplies offers retaining rings from brands like Smalley, Grainger, Fabory and Rotor Clip. The exposed surface of the retaining ring acts as a shoulder to retain the component, withstand the forces associated with it and prevent unwanted movement of the mated components. Broadly classified, they are available in two variants: external and internal retaining rings.

Features

Smalley Spiral Retaining Rings::

  • These Spirolox retaining rings are ideal for thrust-bearing applications that require a deep groove or a high load withstanding capacity.
  • The no-gap and no-protruding ear design facilitates a 360-degree retaining surface without interfering with the mated components.
  • The brand's WHM & WSM Series retaining rings feature Imperial groove dimensions in the internal bore & external shafts, respectively.
  • They can be installed / removed easily using their 2-turn spiralling mechanism.

Texas Pneumatic Tools Retaining Rings:

  • These circlips are semi-flexible retaining rings with open ends that act as a self-locking mechanism for spring tension.
  • They are snapped into a machined groove to allow rotation of shafts or dowel pins, but prevent sideways movement.
  • Most of these retaining rings have small holes at either end for installation or removal using the circlip plier tips.

Rotor Clip E-Style Retaining Rings:

  • These side-mount external retaining rings have three prongs that form an E-shaped design for optimum contact with the shaft
  • These rings are made of stainless steel or carbon steel with yellow zinc or black phosphate finish.
  • They are installed by pushing them into the shaft groove.

Rotor Clip Poodle Retaining Rings:

  • These wide-grip, side-mount external retaining rings are similar to E-style retaining rings but have ears on their sides (resembling those of a poodle dog) for larger surface contact.
  • They fit shaft diameters ranging from 3/8 to 1 inch and have carbon steel construction with black phosphate finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are snap rings the same as retaining rings?

Yes, retaining rings are also called snap rings.

What are the advantages of snap rings?

  • Snap rings prevent the axial movement / shifting of the attached components in the bearing seats by absorbing the forces.
  • They are cheaper than other fastening technologies.
  • They require minimal shaft / housing preparation, including threading, tapping or drilling procedures.

What is the difference between external and internal retaining rings?

An internal retaining ring fits into housing or bore, whereas an external retaining ring fits over or around a shaft or pin.

How to install and remove a snap ring?

  • Internal retaining / snap rings are compressed whereas external snap rings are expanded to install / remove from a shaft or housing groove.
  • Retaining rings without any holes can be installed by pushing them into the grooves of a shaft / housing. Similarly, they can be removed by pulling them using a screwdriver.
  • Spiral retaining rings (both internal & external) can be spiralled into the groove and removed by prying one end out of the groove using a screwdriver.
  • Circlips feature holes that can be squeezed / expanded using a specialised plier for installing or removing them.
  • Bowed / poodle retaining rings or E-Clips can be installed or removed using an E-ring tool or plier.
  • NOTE: Most of these retaining rings can be installed / removed using a screwdriver. But, due to the spring effect of these rings, there is a risk of them flying off if improperly handled. Users should wear proper safety equipment like safety goggles to prevent injuries.

Can we reuse a retaining ring?

Most retaining rings or snap rings can be removed and reused multiple times without any issue, provided that the stress generated during installation is kept minimal. However, selected models of snap rings like self-locking retaining rings get permanently locked with the shaft / housing and cannot be removed without breaking or warping the ring out of specified tolerances.
