Tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding uses a static, non-consumable electrode, whereas metal inert gas (MIG) welding uses a consumable electrode that acts as a filler metal to meltdown & fill the gap between the metals to be joined. TIG welding may require the addition of a small diameter filler rod into the arc while the MIG welding electrode is continuously fed into the welding gun / torch from a wire pool. MIG welding electrodes are selected based on the welded materials. However, the TIG welding electrodes are always made of tungsten or its alloys.
AC powered TIG torches are generally used for welding non-ferrous metals like aluminium & magnesium, while DC powered Miller Weldcraft TIG torches are suitable for welding ferrous alloys like steel or stainless steel.
