Inert gases like argon are used during TIG welding of metal workpieces.
Where is TIG welding used?
TIG (tungsten inert gas) welding is ideal for creating clean, precise welds in applications where appearances are crucial. It is also called gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) and is suitable for welding thin materials.
How does TIG welding work?
A TIG torch is attached to the TIG welder unit.
An electrode rod is fitted on the TIG torch.
When the welder unit supplies current to the electrode, an arc is created from the electrode to the workpiece. This arc generates heat and melts the workpiece material for creating the weld.
The TIG torch also supplies external shielding gas at the weld zone to prevent contamination of the molten weld pool.
A filler metal rod may also be added during the welding (for adding more material for the weld).
