Why are Powercoil inserts larger in diameter than the tapped hole before installation?

Diameter of thread inserts are slightly larger than the tapped hole diameter before installation as the installation tool reduces the diameter of the leading coil when it applies torque to the insert's tang, thereby allowing the insert to enter the tapped hole. After installing a threaded insert, its high tensile stainless steel coil acts like a spring and expands outward onto the metallic material for a strong anchoring connection.

What are PowerCoil screw-lock inserts and why are they dyed red?

Screw-lock inserts are suitable for places where there may be vibration, permitting the mating fastener (screw) to loosen. These screw-lock insert ?locks? the mating fastener into a position where a certain amount of torque is needed to release the fastener, removing the need for a lock washer. Screw-lock inserts are dyed red for identification purposes only.

  • If there is a problem while installing a threaded insert, first match the insert with its correct tap & drill size and then check for wear on them. Helical thread plug gages may also be used to check the tapped holes before installing the insert.
  • If the insert installs perfectly, but there is a problem in winding the mating fastener, match the fastener's dimensions with the diameter & pitch of the installed thread insert.
