Diameter of thread inserts are slightly larger than the tapped hole diameter before installation as the installation tool reduces the diameter of the leading coil when it applies torque to the insert's tang, thereby allowing the insert to enter the tapped hole. After installing a threaded insert, its high tensile stainless steel coil acts like a spring and expands outward onto the metallic material for a strong anchoring connection.
Screw-lock inserts are suitable for places where there may be vibration, permitting the mating fastener (screw) to loosen. These screw-lock insert ?locks? the mating fastener into a position where a certain amount of torque is needed to release the fastener, removing the need for a lock washer.
